Decatur County leaders vote to close rural Tennessee hospital

Decatur County General is the latest small Tennessee hospital on the brink of closure.

The county commissioners voted Thursday night to close the community-owned hospital located in Parsons, a town of about 2,300.

Full closure of the hospital will require an additional vote by the hospital board, but the county commission controls funding for the facility. Without their support it is likely doomed.

The vote to close was spurred by years of financial losses — including $435,000 in 2018 — and the abrupt departure of the hospital manager. Progressive Medical Group defaulted its agreement with the hospital on Jan. 31, leaving the county in charge of meeting payroll, according to county officials.
