3 U.S. coalition troops killed in rocket attack on Iraq base

Two Americans and another member of the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq were killed Wednesday in a rocket attack on a base near Baghdad, a U.S. military spokesman said.

At least 12 people were wounded. Five of them were in serious condition.

The strike could escalate tensions between the United States and Iran about two months after the two sides exchanged deadly attacks, including a U.S. drone strike that killed a top Iranian commander, Qassem Soleimani, in Baghdad.

In Wednesday’s attack, about 18 Katyusha rockets hit Camp Taji about 17 miles north of Baghdad.

Such weapons have been associated with Iranian-backed militias.

The rockets were fired from northeast Baghdad, and Iraqi forces found a truck rigged with rockets a few miles from the base, the U.S. military said.
