McWhorter, a health care entrepreneur turned venture capitalist turned CEO of the Nashville Entrepreneur Center, was named to Lee’s government team in late 2018 as commissioner of the state’s department of finance and administration and thus lead work on its budget. Earlier this year, he said he would step down from his finance post to lead Lee’s COVID-19 Unified Command group coordinating the state’s response to the pandemic.

McWhorter, who will be succeeded in his state finance post by Butch Eley, has stayed involved with Clemson since his graduation in 1991. Three years ago, he was named to a six-month term as executive-in-residence to advise President James Clements and Provost Robert Jones on plans to support entrepreneurship and promote economic development in South Carolina.
