Dr. Anthony Fauci on Tuesday warned of unnecessary “suffering and death” if governors reopen state economies before implementing adequate safeguards against a renewed surge in coronavirus infections.

“There is a real risk that you will trigger an outbreak that you may not be able to control,” Fauci said, testifying by video before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.

Fauci and two of the other witnesses — Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Stephen Hahn, the head of the Food and Drug Administration — testified under self-quarantine after possible exposure to the virus.

The hearing came as the U.S. death toll from the pandemic surpassed 82,000, with a total of nearly 1.4 million infections nationwide.
