Biden picks California attorney general as HHS secretary

Photo of Rep. Xavier Becerra [D-CA34, 2013-2017]President-elect Joe Biden has chosen California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to be his secretary of health and human services.

If confirmed, Becerra would be the first Latino to run the department. Becerra, a former congressman, reportedly had been considered a likely candidate to be Biden’s attorney general.

In California, he has led 20 states and the District of Columbia in the fight to defend the Affordable Care Act against Republican efforts to dismantle it.

Becerra was the representative for California’s 34th congressional district and was a Democrat. He served from 2013 to 2017.

He was previously the representative for California’s 31st congressional district as a Democrat from 2003 to 2012; and the representative for California’s 30th congressional district as a Democrat from 1993 to 2002.
