Anger towards a Christmas light display in NY

Special Thanks to Kathryn

From Joanne

When I was a kid growing up in Brooklyn, New York, my parents would take us out and drive around to see all the Christmas lights – we loved them. We would also go into NYC and walk down 5th Avenue to see all the incredible window displays in the fancy stores and we’d end up the “tour” at FAO Schwartz which always had the most incredible displays.

As many of you know, I am Jewish and while we do not celebrate Christmas, I’ve always enjoyed the way others have made it a festive holiday, just as we do for many of our observances.

This just makes me so mad and sad at the same time.

Minnesota resident’s Christmas light display shamed for ‘harmful impact’ to community in anonymous letter

Front line nurse ‘surprised, shocked and saddened’ by letter

“I couldn’t help but notice your Christmas light display. During these unprecedented times, we have all experienced challenges which casual words just don’t describe what we’re feeling. The idea of twinkling, colorful lights are a reminder of divisions that continue to run through our society, a reminder of systemic biases against our neighbors who don’t celebrate Christmas or who can’t afford to put up lights of their own,” the letter, shared by Crime Watch Minneapolis, reads. “We must do the work of educating ourselves about the harmful impact an outward facing display like yours can have.”
