Jury Selection In Derek Chauvin Trial Starts Today

Jury selection begins today in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer accused of killing George Floyd last May. Leaders in Minneapolis have expressed concerns about unrest in conjunction with the trial. Barricades have been put up around the Hennepin County Government Center, stretching for blocks in Minneapolis.

Protesters and activists plan to be there this week as the trial begins.

Newsy will be covering the trial, but we will also have stories about the people in the community who are hopeful for change there. Randall Smith is one such activist. He runs a space called All Square, which pairs people formerly incarcerated with the skills they need to start their own businesses. He sees the trial as a turning point for the community.

When asked if he thinks better days are ahead, Smith said, “I hope so. I think so.”
