I turned 64 this week and I got a huge surprise on my birthday. Sean Hannity called me. Yes, THE Sean Hannity. He called to thank me for sending him a signed print of my Rush Limbaugh memorial cartoon. We talked for about 15 minutes. It was a very nice surprise.

GUESS WHO GOT CANCELED

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

I recently linked to a story about Gannett, America’s largest newspaper chain and my former employer, cancelling Mallard Fillmore, a conservative comic strip drawn by my friend Bruce Tinsley. It’s unprecedented that a newspaper corporation would order its entire chain of papers to cancel a feature. The story is here. Well, this week, a small newspaper chain in Indiana called KPC Media Group informed me that they ordered its 14 Indiana newspapers to cancel their subscription to my cartoons. Why? Executive Editor Steve Garbacz wrote, “The content of many cartoons have veered way off into the unfair, extreme or frankly politically imagined viewpoints.” “Unfair, extreme?”I admit that I was puzzled until I read the last sentence of the email which made the decision very clear. “We hope you’ll consider pursuing more moderation in the future, but until such a time, we’ll be ceasing service.” “Moderation?” I’m a conservative. My book is called, “Drawing The Right Way.” My newsletter is called, “Varvel’s Views From The Right.” Cartoonists have always served at the pleasure of editors. I noticed over my 40-year career, that the political worldview of editors changed when younger editors took the place of retiring ones. So I’m not surprised that this is happening. I’ve learned by studying the Bible that, “All things work together for good…” (Romans 8:28). Sure, I lost some newspapers and some income but I trust in the One who gave me this, “Talent on loan from God,” as Rush Limbaugh famously said. The Lord has already prepared in advance, the work that I am to do (Ephesians 2:10). So I will choose to be thankful to God for the years those newspapers supported me, thankful for the newspapers that still subscribe to my cartoons and thankful for people like you who subscribed to this newsletter. In this age of canceling conservatives, I hope you’ll encourage your friends to subscribe to my bi-weekly newsletter here. Make your weekend a masterpiece.
