Non sequitur

Definition: an abrupt occurrence or rapid occurrence or transition

Etymology: Latin: non sequitur, from the root “sekw-” which means “to follow.”

non sequitur was popularized in the 1530s to refer to an inference that doesn’t follow the premise.

In a Sentence

Considering he was recovering quickly, his sister’s death was an utter non sequitur.

The non sequitur throws off the audience. Example: “My car broke down. I wonder what my mom is doing”
