Downtown Library gets $77K for more parking

The Madison County Commission approved funding Monday night to add additional parking spaces for the Jackson-Madison County Library.

The county commission voted 19-2 in favor of paying $77,000 to help purchase a building adjacent to the library, on Lafayette and Royal Street. The building would then be torn down, and the property would be leveled into future parking spaces.

Depending on the vote by the City Council the City of Jackson and Madison County will evenly split the cost of acquiring the land and building new parking spaces.

A previous Councilman had determined years ago there was no additional way to add additional parking without expansion.

Jackson-Madison County Library Director Dinah Harris said the library currently has 65 parking spots, and the additional funds could potentially double the current amount of parking space.

“If you go to the grocery store or somewhere, if you have to park a mile away you’re not going to stop unless you’re really hungry,” Harris said. “Having parking spaces that are closer makes it easier for people with their children.”
