What you fear will test your faith in God the most!

Think about that for a second! What is it you fear?

There was this rather campy movie about football which starred Gene Hackman and Keanu Reeves in which the coach played by Hackman asked this very question of his team players. Most thought of the standard, first thing that came to mind answer…. Spiders, dark places…. But Reeves’ answer was quicksand or rather the feeling that no matter what you did you would sink deeper and deeper until it was over your head.

Twenty six years ago my answer would have been “I don’t know if I could stand the pain of losing my parents.” And then it happened … both my parents gone within a year, mom first and then my father.

I loved my parents and I needed their wisdom and their guidance and support but then it was gone…with quicksand all around.

I wrestled with God, but I came to find the Lord as my “refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble”. In times of change, I find one thing of great comfort. God is with me. That was easy to say…not so easy to do.

Don’t get me wrong, I did my sharing of crying over the loss of family and friends. Those that have been in my life for many years and it was hard to part from them. I shared something dear with all of them. They had pulled me from quicksand time and time again. They were the earthly reminders of my faith and like all of us, we must be reminded constantly that there is a power above all else that helps pull us from the quicksand.
