Early in the afternoon on the last day of May a fire started near Ute Park, New Mexico…near Philmont’s Central Country. Over the course of the past week and a half, that fire grew quickly to 57 square miles. Hundreds of firefighters in crews, helicopters, engines, dozers, and water tenders have been attacking this fire and defending Philmont. They continue to do so north and west of Cimarroncito camp as you read this.

Our great thanks to the men and women bending their backs and risking their lives to protect Philmont.

Philmont announced it would be closed to backcountry treks until at least July 14th and PTC until June 23rd. Staff were evacuated to Springer from Base for a short time but are now back training and preparing for campers’ arrival. Displaced crews are being rescheduled and even re-placed to neighboring Scout camps in Colorado and Texas, as well as our fellow bases of Northern Tier, Sea Base, and Summit.
