NASHVILLE — A California man was arrested after allegedly being caught with nearly 60 pounds of marijuana at the Nashville International Airport.

According to the police report, a K-9 officer detected the smell of narcotics coming from the man’s luggage on Thursday.

Jose Medina Ayala, 23, reportedly admitted the luggage was his and allowed officers to search his belongings.

Police said they found 59.25 pounds of marijuana sealed within 51 different bags, which officials say is consistent with drug trafficking.

According to the police report, Ayala also had more than $2,000 in cash with him.

When he was questioned about the drugs and the money, Ayala reportedly said it was not his.

Ayala, who is from Bakersfield, CA, told police he worked at a tree trimming company that recently lost its license.

According to the police report, Ayala bought his flight to Nashville the day before using a gift card.

Ayala is charged with possession with the intent to distribute. Bond was set at $100,000.
