A man stabbed the leading candidate in Brazil’s presidential election, lawmaker Jair Bolsonaro, at a campaign rally on Thursday.

Bolsonaro became the frontrunner in the Oct. 7 first round after Brazil’s electoral court last week barred the left’s leading candidate, former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, from running due to corruption charges.

Bolsonaro is a controversial figure who has angered many Brazilians with divisive comments but is revered by conservatives. He will spend at least a week in the hospital and take up to two months to recover, said Dr. Luiz Henrique Borsato.

“His internal wounds were grave and put the patient’s life at risk,” Borsato said.
