Former crime boss and FBI informant James “Whitey” Bulger was found dead at a West Virginia prison shortly after being transferred there, the Federal Bureau of Prisons said Tuesday.

The FBI is looking into how Bulger, 89, died; The Boston Globe reported that “a fellow inmate with Mafia ties is being investigated for the slaying.”

Bulger was a notorious Boston mob boss in the 1970s and 1980s. He spent 16 years on the run before his arrest in 2011 and conviction in 2013 in connection with the murder of 11 people.
