Kamala Harris Pushes For Slavery Reparations

Written by Justin Caruso  |  Blabber Buzz

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) said in an interview Monday she supports “some type of” reparations to black Americans for slavery. In an interview with the “Breakfast Club,” a radio show on New York City’s Power 105.1, host Charlamagne tha God asked Kamala Harris about reparations.

“Where do you stand on some form of reparations for black people? Here you see Mayor De Blasio saying the marijuana economy could be a form of reparations. Marianne Williamson says black people should get a hundred billion in slave reparations–like, where do you stand on it?” Charlamagne asked.

Harris responded:

Well look, I think that we have got to address that again, it’s back to the inequities. There, through–look, America has a history of 200 years of slavery. We had Jim Crow. We had legal segregation in America for a very long time. The Voting Rights Act was only strong for 50 years and then they wiped it out with this United States Supreme Court in the Shelby decision, to the point that 22 states immediately thereafter put in place laws that one court found were crafted with surgical precision to have black people not be able to vote.”

So we’ve got to recognize, back to that earlier point, people aren’t starting out on the same base, in terms of their ability to succeed and so we have got to recognize that and give people a lift up. And, there are a number of ways to do it. Part of my initiative again around the ‘Lift Act’ is that same point–you lifting people up who are making less than a hundred thousand dollars a year. What I want to do about rent is the same thing. What we need to do around education and understanding disparities, what we need to do around HBCUs. But we have a history of racism in America.

Charlamagne asked again, “So you are for some type of reparations?”

“Yes I am, yes I am,” Harris responded.

Harris announced her 2020 campaign in January, kicking off the race by saying, “The American people deserve to have someone who is going to fight for them, who is going to see them, who will hear them, who will care about them and put them in front of self-interest.”

Last week, she expressed support for the socialist Green New Deal introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

Senator Kamala Harris followed the lead of several other Democratic presidential candidates on Monday in announcing her support for the legalization of recreational marijuana.

“Half my family’s from Jamaica,” the California Democrat replied when asked about the issue in an appearance on the New York radio show The Breakfast Club.

“Are you kidding me?”

“Listen, I think it gives a lot of people joy. And we need more joy,” Harris said when asked whether she would repeat her college experience of smoking a joint should the drug be legalized federally for recreational use.

“I did inhale,” she laughed. “It was a long time ago, but yes. I just broke news!”

The senator added, however, that she supports regulations on use of the drug while driving as well as more “research [into] the impact of weed on a developing brain.”

Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, another high-profile Democrat vying for the party’s presidential nomination, brought the issue up early on and pushed for federal legalization. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who is also seeking the nomination, supported Booker’s proposals to loosen restrictions on the drug and said last year that, “the federal government needs to get out of the business of outlawing marijuana.” Senator Amy Klobuchar, who announced her presidential campaign on Sunday, signed onto a bill Warren herself sponsored that sought to protect states where marijuana is legal from federal intervention.

A majority of Americans, 62 percent, support legalizing marijuana, according to a Pew Research Center poll last fall.

California Sen. Kamala Harris, reiterating her support for marijuana legalization at the federal level, acknowledged Monday that she’s smoked pot in the past, saying: “I have. And I inhaled. I did inhale.”

The 2020 Democratic presidential contender, in discussing the broader use of the drug, said, “I think it gives a lot of people joy.

And we need more joy in the world.”

Harris made her comments on “The Breakfast Club,” the New York City-based nationally syndicated radio program hosted by DJ Envy, Angela Yee and Charlamagne tha God. The program touts that it is “the world’s most dangerous morning show.”

“It was a long time ago but yes. I just broke news,” the senator and former Golden State attorney general said as she discussed her past pot use. She added that she smoked weed in college and that “it was a joint.”
