Who can be guilty of murder in California?

California prosecutors in many counties are pushing back against a law the Legislature passed last year limiting when accomplices in homicides can be convicted of murder.

The law is retroactive, meaning people who didn’t pull the trigger but went to prison on murder convictions can appeal their sentences.

The Chronicle’s Alexei Koseff reports that the result is that inmates convicted in some counties are going free, while those in counties that are fighting the law remain behind bars.
