Senate fails to override Trump vetoes protecting Saudi arms sales

The Senate on Monday failed to override President Trump’s vetoes of three resolutions seeking to block his decision to sidestep Congress and sell arms to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The votes passed 45 to 40, 45 to 39, and 46 to 41, falling far short of the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto.

Congress passed the three resolutions in June after the Trump administration signaled it planned to go through with the arms deals without congressional approval.

Many lawmakers were seeking to punish Saudi leaders for contributing to the humanitarian crisis in Yemen with their military campaign against Houthi rebels, and for the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
