President Biden struggled to communicate clearly in last night’s presidential debate, sparking criticism from both sides of the political aisle.
Biden’s voice was often quiet and raspy, and he stumbled over his words quite a few times—opening himself up to quips like this from former President Trump: “I really don’t know what he said at the end of that sentence; I don’t think he does either.”
The two candidates sparred over the economy, border policy, and abortion (and even golf), but the substance of the debate was overshadowed by Biden’s shaky performance. CNN’s John King reported a “deep, a wide, and a very aggressive panic in the Democratic Party” after the debate, and reports quickly circulated of key Democrats calling for Biden to drop out.
In betting markets, Biden’s odds of receiving the Democratic nomination plummeted 15 points, and California Governor Gavin Newsom’s odds rose considerably.
The final debate is scheduled for September 10th on ABC News.
