SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Jaylen King threw for 198 yards and ran for 88 yards with a pair of touchdowns as the East Tennessee State Buccaneers downed Wofford 24-7 Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium.
The Bucs’ quarterback connected on 18 of his 32 pass attempts and rushed 12 times to lead the ETSU offense. Bryson Irby had 67 yards on 17 carries and Karim Page caught seven passes for 88 yards. It was the Blue and Gold defense that carried the day as they limited the home-standing Terriers to only 178 yards, 2-of-12 on third downs and nine first downs the entire contest. William McRainey, Ray Coney and Ryan Barrett all had five tackles for the visitors.
Ewan Johnson provided the only scoring in the first half as his 28-yard field with 5:55 to go in the third quarter made it a 3-0 ETSU at the mid-game break. Teddy Wilson forced a Wofford fumble deep in their own territory and Elijah Taylor was there for the 15-yard scoop and score to make it 10-0 Bucs. Wofford’s only score of the game came in the third quarter when Bryce Corriston hit Jordan Davis for a 29-yard touchdown.
King put the game out of reach with a pair of rushing touchdowns as he scored from the 22 early in the third quarter and then was in again in the final frame on a 31-yard TD run to make the final 24-7. ETSU improves to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the Southern Conference while Wofford falls to 3-5, 1-4 in the league.
