A 76-year-old Douglas County woman helped authorities capture two men who scammed her out of over $200,000. The suspects were arrested after a sting operation in May dubbed “Operation I Love Gold.”
The elaborate scheme began with a fraudulent iPad message, instructing the woman to buy gold bars for “security.” When the scammers requested more, she contacted law enforcement, leading to the men’s arrest. Both suspects pleaded guilty to attempted theft and were sentenced to six years in prison. They’re suspected of similar scams and may face deportation back to India after serving their sentences.
