Trump Tariffs Turn Colombia Around

The White House said Sunday night that Colombia had backed down in its fight with President Donald Trump over allowing U.S. military flights to return illegal immigrants to that country.

The turnaround came hours after Trump announced he was imposing a 25% tariff on Colombian goods and a travel ban on its officials due to Colombian President Gustavo Petro rejecting two deportation flights from the U.S. and refusing to accept others.

White House officials held up the episode as a warning to other nations, and said the tariffs would be held in reserve but not signed if the flights resumed.

The government of Colombia has agreed to all of President Trump’s terms, including the unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens from Colombia returned from the United States, including on U.S. military aircraft, without limitation or delay,” said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
