The Defense Department said Friday that it will cut 5,400 probationary workers starting next week and put a hiring freeze in place.
The DoD is the largest government agency, with more than 700,000 full-time civilian workers. The cuts will not include uniformed military personnel, who are exempt.
FBI Director Kash Patel plans to relocate up to 1,000 employees from Washington to field offices around the country and move an additional 500 to a large bureau facility in Huntsville, Alabama.
During the first month of Trump’s second term, at least 75 career FBI officials and Department of Justice lawyers have either been fired, resigned, or stripped of their positions.
