Gary Varvel: Pelosi echoes Trump’s tariff policy

RECIPROCAL TARIFFS

A 1996 video (below) of Rep. Nancy Pelosi is going viral for echoing President Donald Trump’s current tariff policies.

America has suffered through 50 years of trade deficits with foreign nations like China. These countries slapped American goods with high tariffs, but we didn’t reciprocate at the same rate. Trump claims we’re getting ripped off and in order to level the playing field, he retaliated with reciprocal tariffs. Now 50 countries want to renegotiate their tariffs.

Trump should remind Pelosi of her ‘96 speech and thank her for helping him make tariffs great again.

In this video, Pelosi says, “In terms of tariffs, it’s interesting to note that the average US MFN [Most Favored Nation] tariff on Chinese goods coming into the United States is two percent, whereas the average MFN tariff on US goods going into China is 35 percent.”

She used to believe this imbalance was unfair.
