More than 14,000 Afghans and close to 7,900 Cameroonians will have their temporary deportation protections (TPS) terminated, according to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
The secretary found that conditions in Afghanistan and Cameroon no longer merit U.S. protection. TPS is granted to nationals of designated countries facing conditions, such as armed conflict or environmental disasters, which make it unsafe for them to return home.
The Biden administration granted TPS status for Afghanistan in the aftermath of the United States’ withdrawal from the country when the U.S. made efforts to evacuate Afghan nationals who had aided the United States.
Citizens of both countries have been protected by TPS since 2022. Courts have blocked similar efforts by Noem for other countries.
