Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito told lawmakers Wednesday that he wouldn’t recuse himself from cases involving the 2020 election after it was reported that an upside-down flag was flown at his house.
The inverted flag, and another colonial-era flag flown at Alito’s house, have been associated with former President Donald Trump’s assertions that the 2020 election was stolen, and Democrats are urging Alito to recuse himself from those cases.
Alito said the flags were flown by his wife and he wasn’t aware of it at first. When he asked her to take it down, she refused for several days. “I had nothing whatsoever to do with the flying of that flag,” he said in rejecting calls for his recusal.
