Stough, who appeared on Season 21 of the reality singing competition show, was arrested by Tennessee Highway Patrol after responding to a single vehicle crash shortly before 1:30 a.m. local time, authorities said in a statement to USA TODAY Sunday.

The 20-year-old country crooner was charged with driving under the influence, underage consumption of alcohol and failure to exercise due care.

A representative for Stough was not available.

During his turn on “American Idol” in 2023, Stough impressed judges with his rockabilly sensibilities and gravelly baritone, making it all the way to the finals before placing third overall behind Iam Tongi and Megan Danielle.

Tongi, who nabbed the first place spot, pulled off an upset − becoming the first non-country singer in several years to win, and the first of Pacific Islander descent. Danielle and Stough, from Georgia and Mississippi respectively, more closely resembled previous the country acts that have dominated the show in recent memory.

Following the release of his debut single “I Still Talk to Jesus,” Stough came out with an EP, “Lookin for Home” − a six-track classic country project that leans into religious themes. His website lists several upcoming shows, including a concert later this week in Saratoga Springs, New York.
