The Athens City Council voted Tuesday to allow the city attorney to file a lawsuit against one of their members.

That suit could lead to that member’s ouster.

A report from the city attorney found councilman Dick Pelley tried to install new flags at Athens Veteran’s Park without council approval.

It says his actions put the public in harm’s way by not following the proper regulations for the construction.

Councilman Pelley called for the council to move past this case, and said a lawsuit would be an unnecessary cost to the city.

“God and I know the truth… and the truth will keep me free,” Pelley says.

The council voted against a motion that would have allowed a public hearing over this.

Councilman Pelley has been on the council since 2002.
