Willie Mays, one of the greatest baseball players of all time and arguably the greatest center fielder ever, died Tuesday afternoon. The “Say Hey Kid” was 93.
Mays played from 1951 to 1973, most of it with the Giants, first in New York and then in San Francisco when the team moved west in 1958. He was the National League home run champion four times and finished his career with 660 home runs and 3,283 hits.
Mays first achieved legendary status in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series, with a basket catch deep in center field that became known simply as “The Catch” and was immortalized in a photo of the moment.
