Canada Announces Snap Election

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday called a snap election for April 28, just nine days after taking office, citing the need to address Canada’s ongoing trade tensions with the United States.

Carney has described the situation as the “most significant crisis of our lifetimes,” as recent U.S. tariff proposals raise concerns about cross-border trade.

His main challenger, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, is running on a platform of Canadian self-reliance. Other contenders include Jagmeet Singh of the left-leaning New Democratic Party.

Polls currently show the Liberals leading the Conservatives 42% to 37%.
