Colorado Gov. Polis Vetoes Rideshare Bill

Gov. Polis on Friday vetoed House Bill 1291, a measure aimed at boosting rideshare safety, following public pushback from Uber and Lyft.

In its final form, the bill would have required more frequent background checks, banned drivers from offering food or drink, and added an option to record rides, among other regulations.

Uber had threatened to leave Colorado if the bill became law, directing users through an in-app message to oppose the measure. Lyft followed suit by urging a veto. In his veto letter, Polis echoed the companies’ concerns, citing “unclear language” and “unworkable regulations” that could jeopardize their operations in Colorado. He encouraged lawmakers, along with Uber and Lyft, to enhance rideshare safety by other means.
