There is a story about a Colorado woman who hadn’t spoken to her prom date in decades. But when she heard that he needed a kidney transplant, she didn’t hesitate. Thirty-five years after they danced together, she stepped up and saved his life.
Some bonds fade. Others quietly endure, waiting for a moment like this.
It made us wonder—who would you show up for, no questions asked?
A Colorado woman who attended prom with a Pennsylvania doctor 35 years ago has donated a kidney to help save his life.
Elena Hershey learned through mutual friends that Dr. Shawn Moyer needed a third kidney transplant after his previous transplants failed.
Though not a direct biological match for Moyer, Hershey donated her kidney through a “paired exchange” program last summer, which guaranteed him priority for a transplant within six months.
Moyer received the call on Feb. 14 that a kidney was available, with the surgery successfully completed last Thursday.
“It’s just a remarkable thing for somebody to do,” said Moyer of Hershey’s life-saving gift, while Hershey described her decision simply: “A few weeks of having to rest and a few days of discomfort to extend someone’s life? It really is kind of a no-brainer.”
