Rep. Nancy Mace announced plans Tuesday to introduce legislation banning biological men from using women’s restrooms and changing rooms in federal buildings and schools.
The proposed legislation coincides with Rep.-elect Sarah McBride preparing to be sworn in as the first representative who was born male but now identifies as a woman to serve in Congress.
Mace, the first female graduate of The Citadel, argued that allowing biological men who identify as transgender women into women’s restrooms and locker rooms threatens the safety and dignity of female lawmakers, officers, and Capitol Hill employees.
House Speaker Mike Johnson called for treating all individuals with dignity and respect while supporting Mace’s proposed legislation, stating men don’t belong in women’s bathrooms.
