Bryson DeChambeau won his second US Open trophy Sunday in a dramatic one-stroke victory that ended with Rory McIlroy missing a short putt on the final hole while DeChambeau scrambled out of trouble with a sensational sand shot.
McIlroy, a former US Open winner himself, hasn’t won a major tournament since 2014 but came close Sunday. He missed two three-foot putts in the final holes, costing himself a victory this year. He declined to be interviewed after the tournament.
DeChambeau dedicated his victory to Payne Stewart, who won the tournament 25 years ago by draining a 15-foot putt to beat Phil Mickelson by one shot. Both DeChambeau and Stewart attended Southern Methodist University.
