One of the city’s poorest neighborhoods is a step closer to revitalization thanks to $50 million the Chattanooga Housing Authority has been awarded by the federal government.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development approved the funds to redevelop Chattanooga’s Westside neighborhood, a project officials expect will ultimately be a $1 billion remake of the community over the next decade. The program is one of six across the nation fully funded by the Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant, according to the housing authority.

Under a plan called One Westside, officials intend to demolish and fully replace 629 units of public housing at College Hill Courts and Gateway Towers. All existing residents will be able to return to the neighborhood.
