Two people were killed and six others injured Thursday when a 20-year-old Florida State University student opened fire near the campus student union in Tallahassee.
The suspect, Phoenix Ikner—identified as the son of a longtime Leon County sheriff’s deputy—was shot by responding officers and hospitalized. Authorities say he used weapons connected to his mother, who has served with the department for over 18 years.
Witnesses described chaos as students fled or barricaded classrooms. One bystander said the gunman exited an orange Hummer with a rifle, then returned for a handgun before firing at random.
Police say the area remains an active crime scene. The motive is still under investigation by local, state, and federal agencies.
