Gary Varvel: Another school shooting and how we should respond

Another school year and another school shooting. This leads to another demand that the government do something, which leads to another debate over gun control and the Second Amendment. It’s Groundhog Day for the umpteenth time.

This is yet, another example of how secularism has failed miserably. Liberal humanists (godless) believe that everyone is essentially good. The Bible says people are sinners.

Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

And Jesus said in Matthew 15:19, “For out of the heart come evil thoughts — murder …”

Murder is a spiritual problem that government can’t fix. Only the Word of God and the Spirit of God can change the human heart. There are no laws that can make people love one another. So what can we do to stop this from continuing?

If politicians would just learn from the wisdom of the Founding Fathers, perhaps we reverse this murderous trend.

In 1798, Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence wrote, “A Defense of the Use of the Bible as a School Book.”

In it he said, “I lament that we waste so much time and money in punishing crimes and take so little pains to prevent them… we neglect… the universal education of our youth in the principles of Christianity by means of the Bible.”

Rush was right. We waste time and money punishing criminals but we’re not doing the one thing that has the chance of preventing crime — “a Biblical education in the principles of Christianity.” Unbelievers are offended by the mere thought of this idea. To them, this is foolish because they can’t understand.

2 Corinthians 4:4 says, “Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.”

Thankfully, Romans 1:16 says, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”

Why did the school shooter kill 4 and injure 9 at the Apalachee High School in Georgia? He has a heart problem. He has an evil heart filled with murder and hate. The gun was just the tool he used to carry out this evil act. Only God can change his heart. If the U.S. Supreme Court had not kicked God out of the public schools in 1963, perhaps tragedies like this would never have happened.
