Gary Varvel essay: What Rules The World

One of President Biden’s illegal alien ‘guests’ was arrested for allegedly murdering Rachel Morin, a 37-year-old mother of 5 last year. She’s just one of many innocent victims who would still be alive today if our border czar Kamala Harris, Homeland Security Director Mayorkas and President Biden had closed the border.

WHAT RULES THE WORLD

“You’re a rich man, Varvel,” said Pastor Dan Gelatt in 2004. But he wasn’t talking about financial wealth. He was talking about my family.

Family is the foundation of a nation and mothers used to be highly honored in our culture.

In 1865, Willam Ross Wallace wrote a poem titled, “What Rules The World.” In the third stanza he wrote, “All true trophies of the ages, Are from mother-love impearled, For the hand that rocks the cradle, Is the hand that rules the world.”

A woman’s greatest superpower is her God-given ability to create people and influence the world’s future. This belief is despised today. And men who verbalize that a woman’s greatest accomplishment is not her ability to climb the corporate ladder and break glass ceilings but in being a mother can get you cancelled or fired.

Recently Kansas City Star columnist, Peter Hamm called for the Kansas City Chiefs’ three-time Super Bowl-winning kicker, Harrison Butker, a devout-Catholic, to be fired and replaced with a woman kicker.

What was Butker’s offense? Did he commit rape or sexually-harass someone? No, Butker gave a commencement speech at Benedictine College and said something so vile that the Left demanded that his life be ruined.

Butker said, “Some of you (women) may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

Then, Butker praised his beautiful wife and called her a “homemaker.” He also talked about moving “closer and closer to God’s will in their life. Isabelle’s dream of having a career might not have come true. But if you ask her today, if she has any regrets on her decision, she would laugh out loud without hesitation and say, ‘heck no.’”

Progressives, like Hamm, lost their minds. In their world, no one is allowed to say the truth out loud. In their world, children are expendable and should be aborted so that women are free to pursue financial gain. Sad.

The New York Post article said, “The NFL distanced itself from Butker’s speech, issuing a statement that “his views are not those of the NFL as an organization.”

The woke NFL has no problem with players kneeling to disrespect the American Flag and the National Anthem. And it has a history with wrist-slapping NFL players accused of domestic violence but distances itself from traditional family values. Sad.

Well as a father and grandfather, I’ll gladly stand with Butker and say that he’s right. Psalm 127:3 says, “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.” My wife worked outside of our home but she put motherhood ahead of a career and God rewarded us with 3 children and nine grandchildren who have enriched our lives.

Look, everyone is free to make their own choices, but the test for what’s most important in life is death. The value of things change when you know you’re dying.

When I’m on my deathbed, I’m not going to think about how much money I made or cartoons that I drew or essays that I wrote or movies that I worked on. No, in that moment the most valuable thing that I will leave behind will be the family that my wife and I created together.

On a personal note: Carol Varvel, thank you for your sacrifice in carrying and nurturing our children. You made me a rich man and I love you for it.
