Gary Varvel: Future job interviews for Pro-Hamas protesters

Part 2 of my essay on Damascus.

The college students who are protesting Israel’s right to exist and siding with the terrorist group, Hamas, may find it difficult to find a job after graduation. Fortunately for them, President Joe Biden, promised to pay off their school loans with taxpayers’ money.

PART 2 – JEREMIAH 49 – AGAINST DAMASCUS

In part 1, we saw that Isaiah 17:1 says that “Damascus will cease from being a city, and it will be a ruinous heap.

Since Damascus today is a city of 2 million, many Bible scholars believe this prophecy is in the future and may be in our lifetime. And as Hezbollah, in Lebanon, continues its rocket attacks against Israel, it’s plausible that we could see the fulfillment of this prophecy. The Bible doesn’t tell us the timing of these events.

While writing this essay, I discovered a Newsmax story (below) by John Huddy about the northern Israeli city of Kiryat Shmona. Get this, 95% of the Israeli citizens have evacuated after Hezbollah escalated rocket attacks after October 7th. And according to Huddy, Hezbollah told the Lebanese government that it was ready to expand its front in southern Lebanon against Israel.

Now look, Isaiah 17:4 says that the glory of Israel will fade and then describes how it fades. Look at this verse:

Isaiah 17:6 says, “Only a few of its people will be left, like stray olives left on a tree after the harvest. Only two or three remain in the highest branches, four or five scattered here and there on the limbs,”’ declares the Lord, the God of Israel.”

This idiom compares olives to Israelis and says that very few will be left in the top and middle of the tree (northern Israel). The Israelis are leaving the northern towns just as Isaiah’s prophecy foretold. This may be a partial fulfillment of the coming destruction of Damascus.

One hundred years after Isaiah wrote his book, the prophet Jeremiah wrote about a judgment against Damascus. Is it the same event?

Jeremiah 49:26 “Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day,” says the Lord of hosts.
27 “I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Ben-Hadad.”

All of the men in Damascus will be “cut off,” meaning, killed. Plus a fire will consume the wall of Damascus and consume the palaces. Bible teacher, John Barnett says the wall and palaces were made out of brick and that this fire which consumes them, would have to be as hot as the sun which is like a nuclear blast.

The prophet Jeremiah, called the weeping prophet, wrote 45 chapters warning Israel of the coming of judgment at the hand of the Babylonians. Then in the next 7 chapters he writes a message of judgment to the surrounding nations for how they treated Israel, His chosen people.

Israel today is surrounded by enemies who want to drive them from “the river (Jordan) to the sea (Mediterranean). But God’s promise is still in effect.

Genesis 12:3, “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. And keep in mind that the Bible says that only the Messiah will bring peace to the Earth.
