Gary Varvel: Gov. Whitmer’s portrait

Was she playing peek-a-boo in the Oval Office?

The New York Post reports, “Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer admitted Monday she made a mistake by trying to hide from photographers who came into the Oval Office where she was waiting to meet with President Trump last week.”

She later said that she didn’t want her picture taken. Of course, she was mocked on social media. Someone suggested she had an “Invisibility Folder” ala Harry Potter. Could this childish antic may be the end of her presidential aspirations?

As Christians celebrate Holy Week, I decided to republish this poem from 2023.

JESUS’ BIRTH AND DEATH

by Gary Varvel

At his birth, Mary bore a son.

At his death, Jesus bore our sins.

At birth, his body came from a virgin womb.

At death, his body was placed in a virgin tomb.

At birth, his body was delivered by the hand of Joseph.

At death, his body was buried by the hand of Joseph.

At birth, his body was gently laid in a feeding trough.

At death, his body was tortured and nailed to a cross.

At birth, a star appeared in the heavens.

At death, darkness covered the earth.

At birth, the angels announced his arrival.

At death, a centurion announced his departure.

At birth, lowly shepherds worshipped him.

At death, an angry mob mocked him.

After his birth, wise men came to offer him gifts.

After his death, women came to anoint his corpse.

After his birth, soldiers came to kill him.

After his death, soldiers guarded his tomb.

At birth, he came to die for our sins.

At death, he said, “Father, forgive them.”

At birth, he came to show us God’s love.

At death, he spread arms to show us how much.

At birth, he came to give his life.

At death, he died to give us eternal life.

At birth, he fulfilled the prophets’ word.

At death, he fulfilled the Father’s will.

At his resurrection, he rose to life again.

At his ascension, he promised to come back again.

At his return, he will rescue those who trust in him.
