Gary Varvel: NCAA’s Money ball

MONEY MADNESS

Since 2021, the NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) has allowed college athletes to receive financial compensation. Now the game is all about ‘Show Me The Money.”

  1. NIL collectives, in which boosters and donors raise money to fund student athletes
  2. Endorsement deals with products and services, cash in on social media, and get paid for such things as making personal appearances and signing autographs.
  3. Entrepreneurial services – college athletes are starting their own wealth-building businesses and brands.

In other words, the game has become — Money Ball.

The portal allows players to seek more money from other teams. Therefore, as coach Steve Alford explains below, many teams will have to replace 8 or 9 players every year. This breaks down team unity and loyalty.
