THE RETURN OF BAAL
God designed us to worship. We can’t decide not to worship. We can only decide what to worship.
The late pastor and author Adrian Rogers said, “An idol is anything that we love more, fear more, trust more or serve more than Almighty God.
Idolatry is the greatest sin anyone can commit. Why? Because it transgresses the greatest Commandment—“Love the Lord, your God, with all of your heart, mind, soul and strength.”
The Bible says there is only One true God – The Creator of heaven and earth.
But the Old Testament reveals that Israel’s neighbors worshipped other gods that they made with their hands. Several times, Israel left the worship of the Creator God and worshipped the gods of the nations around them.
Why would Israel worship other gods? First, they turned against God, they became empty and other gods filled that void.
Who were these gods?
In Hebrew, they are called daimoniois or “demons” in English.
Deuteronomy 32:17 says, “They sacrificed to demons, not to God, to gods they did not know, to new gods, new arrivals that your fathers did not fear.”
Satan is called the “god of this world” (with a little ‘g’) in 2 Corinthians 4:4. But he is a created being and when Satan fell from heaven, he took a third of the angels with him. These fallen angels are referred to as demons and they do the bidding of Satan, the chief of the demons.
In Jonathan Cahn’s book, Return of the Gods, he describes in detail, that there was a Dark Trinity or 3 false gods that Israel and their neighboring nations worshipped.
- Baal – the possessor
- Ashtoreth aka Ishtar – the enchantress or seducer
- Molech – the destroyer
In different cultures these gods were called by different names but they had the same purpose.
BAAL
The Canaanite god was called, Baal, known as the master, lord or owner. In the Greek culture, he was known as Zeus or the ‘lord of heaven.’ They believed he was the god of rain, fertility, fruitfulness and prosperity.
Judges 3:7 says, “So the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord. They forgot the Lord their God, and served the Baals and Asherahs.”
Baal worship is in conjunction with forgetting God.
Jeremiah 23:27 complains about the dreams of false prophets:’ “By telling these false dreams, they are trying to get my people to forget me, just as their ancestors did by worshiping the idols of Baal.”
This is exactly what has happened in America.
Fact: America was founded by Bible-believing Christians who were wanted to evangelize this new land.
Fact: The Bible was taught in public schools from 1647-1963.
Fact: A high percentage of our Founding Fathers were evangelical Christians who believed that “our Constitution was made for only for a moral and religious people.” (John Adams)
Fact: President Abraham Lincoln believed that the Civil War was a judgment from God because Americans had “forgotten God.” (Proclamation for a Day of Humiliation, Prayer and Fasting – March 30, 1863)
If Baal caused Americans to forget God, how did he do it? Cahn doesn’t say this in his book, but allow me to connect the dots.
The mind is ground zero in the spiritual war. And just as Satan used a fruit to entice Eve to doubt God, the devil used a man to entice a whole generation to doubt the Biblical account of God’s creation. The man’s name was Charles Darwin born in 1809.
Darwin’s book ‘On the Origin of Species’ written in 1859, was viewed as a plausible alternative to Biblical creation. Darwinism, as it became known, focused on the evolution of man and nature. Science was elevated in importance to godlike status. Today we are told to believe the science, like it is some deity.
Darwin’s theory is actually a doctrine of demons which caused the people of America to forget God, just like the Israelites in the Old Testament. What happened next was inevitable. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1963 that teaching the Bible in public school was unconstitutional.
Once God’s word was removed from the classroom and replaced with Darwinism, faith in God and His moral standards were forgotten. Children were taught that they were animals and they began to act like it. Crime, addictions, sexual immorality, broken homes, homelessness etc, all increased exponentially.
When America became spiritually empty, the gods came to fill the void just like in Jesus’ parable in Matthew 12.
“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. 44 Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he (unclean spirit) comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.” (Matthew 12:44-45)
We have too many unclean spirits in America and only Jesus, who is the Light of the world, can remove the dark forces that cover our land.
