Jimmy Carter’s memorable smile was a staple of caricature artists and editorial cartoonists, like me. He was a Georgia peanut farmer and the 39th President died at 100 years old.
Carter had a friendly smile but his one-term presidency was a disaster. He administration gave America double-digit inflation, double-digit interest rates, gas shortages and the Iran hostage crisis that lasted for 444 days.
Carter blamed the negative mood in America on a national “malaise” and a “crisis of confidence.” Here is the speech that doomed his presidency.
Ronald Reagan won the 1980 election in a landslide with 489 Electoral College votes to Carter’s 49, and 50.7% of the popular vote to Carter’s 41.0%.
After he left office, Carter was known for his Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project for Habitat for Humanity for more than 30 years.
He was also known by many as being the worst president until Joe Biden replaced him for that dishonor.
