On this day in 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt issued a proclamation officially admitting Oklahoma as the 46th state, over 100 years after the land was acquired from France in the Louisiana Purchase.
Speaking of Oklahoma, it got its Sooner State nickname from the Land Run of 1889. During this event, people known as Sooners illegally entered the Oklahoma Territory to claim land before the official start time.
