Hackman, Wife Test Negative For Carbon Monoxide

Actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, both tested negative for carbon monoxide, authorities revealed Friday. Both were found dead, alongside one of their dogs, at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Wednesday.

Hackman is believed to have died on Feb. 17. Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office authorities indicated that was the date of the last recorded “event” on his pacemaker. The two were found in separate rooms.

Hackman, 95, had lived in Santa Fe since the 1980s and married Arakawa, a classical pianist, 65, in 1991.

Hackman, who retired in the early 2000s after a decades-long career that included roles as villains, heroes, and antiheroes, kept a low profile in the Rocky Mountain foothills town, long known as a refuge for famous actors and authors seeking to escape the spotlight.
