The House voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Tuesday evening on their second try in a week, making Mayorkas the first Cabinet official to be impeached in nearly 150 years.
The final vote was 214-213, with the one-vote difference provided by GOP Rep. Steve Scalise, just returned from cancer treatments in the hospital. The first impeachment vote last week essentially tied while Scalise was absent.
Three Republicans joined the Democrats against impeachment in the otherwise straight party-line vote. The two articles of impeachment stem from what the GOP says is Mayorkas’ failure to secure the border.
Mayorkas will now be tried in the Senate, where he’s expected to be found not guilty by the Democratic-controlled chamber.
