Housing Costs and Homelessness

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I–VT) claims that “we need to invest in affordable housing” because “770,000 Americans should not be homeless, and 20 million more should not be spending over half their incomes on rent or a mortgage.”

IN FACT, Sanders vocally supports at least 8 contributors to the high costs of housing and the scourge of homelessness:

1) Government money printing, which makes assets like homes less affordable for people with little wealth.

2) Increased government spending, which is the primary driver of inflation.

3) Aggressive regulations, which raise the costs of living.

4) Green energy mandates, which inflate the costs of energy and virtually everything else.

5) Mass unionization, which raises consumer prices.

6) Mass migration, which causes major increases in family homelessness.

7) Legalizing marijuana, which is associated with higher rates of substance abuse, a major driver of homelessness.

8) Opposition to laws that ban camping on city streets, which spur addicts and mentally ill people to get help.
