The Arapahoe County District Attorney’s (DA) Office is defending its decision to give probation and community service to a teenager who was in the country illegally and driving without a license when he killed a woman.
Investigators say the teen was speeding at more than 90 mph—double the speed limit—when he struck Kaitlyn Weaver’s car, killing the 24-year-old instantly.
The teen faced a possible maximum sentence of two years in youth corrections, but the DA offered a plea deal that resulted in two years of probation and 100 hours of community service. John Weaver, Kaitlyn’s father, says the justice system is broken, noting there is also no financial liability despite nearly $1 million in medical bills.
