Israeli officials confirmed Sunday that Israel had accepted the framework of a U.S. deal to wind down the Gaza war, though they described it as flawed and in need of more work.
The multi-phase plan, which Hamas hasn’t yet accepted, calls first for a ceasefire and a return of some hostages, including some who have died, then a second phase to negotiate a permanent end to fighting and the return of remaining hostages.
Several conservative members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet threatened to quit if any deal is accepted before Hamas is destroyed. That could collapse the government, but Israel’s opposition leaders said they would give Netanyahu political support if needed.
