The Israeli military uncovered an unusually large concrete and iron-girded tunnel designed to carry vehicles from Gaza right to the border, the biggest Hamas tunnel the Israelis have found.
The size and location of the tunnel, which would have taken years to build, raised questions about how Israeli surveillance missed it. The entryway is a few hundred yards from a heavily fortified crossing.
The discovery comes while Israel is dealing with the fallout from the mistaken shooting of three hostages by their own troops. The hostages were killed during intense fighting between Hamas and Israeli soldiers.
